Welcome to our re-entry organization, Alleviate Zimbabwe! We are a registered organization that began operations in July 2022 and received full registration in September 2025. We are dedicated to supporting individuals impacted by the criminal justice system as they move back into society.
A re-entry program is a guided effort designed to help people successfully transition from jail or prison back into their neighborhoods. This process, often called re-integration, means dealing with the many challenges formerly incarcerated individuals face, such as finding a safe place to live and a job, getting an education, and rebuilding personal connections. Our programs are built on the idea that successful re-entry is not just about preventing new crimes; it's about helping people grow, making communities safer, and creating paths to a good life. We believe that by giving complete support, we can help individuals become active and contributing members of society.
Our commitment reaches many different people affected by the criminal justice system. While our main focus is on those coming directly out of correctional facilities (our beneficiaries), we also understand the big impact that incarceration has on families and communities. This includes the children of incarcerated parents, who often face unique difficulties and need specific support to do well. We also offer help to other family members, like spouses, siblings, and parents, who are dealing with the emotional and practical struggles of having a loved one incarcerated. Beyond that, we recognize the wider community, which benefits greatly from good re-entry programs that improve public safety and bring people together.
Crucially, our dedication extends to the victims of crime as well. We understand the profound trauma and lasting effects that criminal acts can have. Our organization provides assistance and support to victims, including survivors of rape and families impacted by murder. We believe that true community healing involves acknowledging and addressing the needs of all those affected by crime, working towards restorative outcomes for everyone involved.
Through our many programs and services, we help individuals on their way to a life that follows the law. We offer programs that build confidence and strength, educational materials that open doors to new chances, job help that leads to steady work, and strong community support networks that create a feeling of belonging. Our main goal is to make the change easier for everyone involved, knowing that when re-entry works well, society as a whole gains a lot. Effective re-entry programs not only lower crime rates but also improve public safety and create a more caring and welcoming community for everyone.
Alleviate Zimbabwe is a re-entry association, based in Masvingo, Zimbabwe, that was established by Makaita Chikamhi Magarezano. As a lawyer and former prosecutor, Magarezano recognized the need for support and assistance for individuals reintegrating into society after being involved with the criminal justice system.
Our association comprises a diverse team of dedicated professionals. It includes lawyers who provide legal guidance, retired correctional officers who offer valuable insights, former police officers who bring their practical experience, mental health professionals who support individuals’ well-being, journalists who help raise awareness, and community members who contribute their perspective and expertise. Furthermore, we also have individuals within our team who have successfully rebuilt their lives despite having past criminal records.
The composition of our team has been carefully designed to address the multifaceted challenges that arise for individuals transitioning back into society. We recognize the complex needs and unique circumstances faced by those who have been involved in the criminal justice system. Through our combined expertise and lived experiences, we aim to provide comprehensive support, guidance, and empowerment to navigate the hurdles encountered post-release.
Met a man who has been in prison for 16 years. The only family who's supposed to meet him is a cousin who is actually in court as we speak, Masvingo Magistate's Court 26/2/24, accused of kidnapping. We gave him a start-up hamper and $10 for transport and hoped for a clean start. He wants to venture into farming.
Due to the drug pandemic, parents are contacting us for assistance with their children who are struggling with drug misuse. Alleviate is a reentry program focused on individuals who have been to prison or a mental health institution and require support upon returning to society. Our primary goal is to help them overcome difficulties and prevent them from reverting back to their old habits.
